This scholarly journal summarizes how surveillance is used in the UK, and how it is specifically utilized by the media. It also gives detailed explanations as to both the negative and positive factors surrounding surveillance. Some issues expanded upon includes the concerning moral values, its human impact and economic issues. For instance, many individuals are saved by surveillance, meaning if there is danger around, it can be captured to expose the truth to an event. But, on the other hand, the privacy of individuals’ are being violated. It also states how the media uses surveillance technology in order to create news, and features of sorts on their channels. The journal cites other works and quotes other pieces of evidence throughout, in order to increase its credibility. This work remains objective and unbiased as it describes the pros and cons of surveillance on multiple themes. This work would be integrated into my essay because it would provide evidence as to how surveillance in used in the UK, where the show, Black Mirror, was created and filmed.

This scholarly article summarizes the term “surveillance studies” as the article reflects on the past and present times of how surveillance is used throughout society. Surveillance advanced quickly throughout the years, as it is used to examine unfair treatment of people in the public and in the society. Examples concerning school teachers and technology in which cops wear when engaging in events to prevent instances of abuse are cited. Surveillance is used to implement certain procedures by higher officials, by taking into account the reaction from the public and by scoping out the area in order to be aware of what services should be placed in the area. The journal also explores how surveillance did not only immerse itself into the public, but also into other forms of culture such as art, media and narratives. Since the journal is a peer-reviewed source, it shows its credibility, along with the fact that other sources are cited and used within the work in order to solidify the author’s argument. This journal can be integrated into my work because it provides sufficient background information into the evolution of surveillance and society and how it severely integrated itself into our culture through its representation in media/art in society. The article adds additional insight to my argument because it provides a thorough examination of the influence of surveillance on and in society.
Calo, Ryan. “Can Americans Resist Surveillance?” The University of Chicago Law Review, vol. 83, no. 1, 2016, pp. 23–43. JSTOR, JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/43741590.
This scholarly journal reflects the effect of surveillance on Americans and its society, but also reviews the methods in which privacy can be incorporated into society. Some of these methods include, voting specific officials into office that have a positive view on privacy and enacting laws to abide by this. Producing certain laws is the key to keeping surveillance in a society under control. Public choice can make a huge difference in privacy laws as people are able to make decisions on how far they are willing to let surveillance run their society. Importantly, one part of our government is able to make provisions to the Constitution which holds the First Amendment and the Fourth Amendment, which focuses around warrant requirement, linking to surveillance. Today surveillance is used primarily in every part of our society, so even though there are laws providing a baseline to the rights of citizens and their privacy, it does not provide significant information when levels exceed that standard. In other words, laws have a limit of power as to how much privacy society can have. The scholarly journal is a credible source since it uses outside sources to back up its statements, and it is peer-reviewed by other scholars. This journal would be integrated into my essay because even though the Netflix show revolves around the UK, it is important to provide information about American society, its government and our position concerning surveillance. Furthermore, this journal provides additional information to my essay as it would be used to compare surveillance in America society, along with surveillance in the UK.
