Pass The Mic/Journal entries

Each class we completed a “Pass The Mic” activity, where an individual from the class would pick a random card which holds an unknown topic and the class would have to free write about that topic for about 10 minutes.  The individual who picked the card for the day then has to go up in front of the class to deliver what they wrote down for the topic.  This is only a few of my favorite journal entries I wrote during these activities:

Feminism

A lot of people have a misconception that women are trying to be above men, but the real definition states that women are trying to be equal to men in certain aspects, such as income amount.  I believe women should not be held back by our gender, instead, we should be paid equal to men and be treated the same in the workplace.  By being treated the same in a work setting, meaning to not be underestimated for our abilities compared to men and to not have any inappropriate advances from any individual.  As a woman, I experienced inequality due to my gender.  For example, I am seen as weak or too emotional, but I know that women, including myself, are just as strong as men and are able to achieve similar goals.  We should fight for every woman to have these rights in a professional and peaceful way.  That would be the only way in order to get our voices heard.  Today, there are a lot of public service announcements or videos portraying the individuality and strength of all women across the world.  Even though here is still a lot more knowledge to be shared about this topic in order to make a change, by sharing negative experiences someone experienced or standing up for something you believe in, in general is definitely a first step at making a difference.

Social Anxiety

Social anxiety can exist at different levels depending on the individual.  For example, someone may not be initially able to approach someone first, but it can be as bad as an individual not being able to leave their house in fear of having to around others.  I believe than an individual would not be able to fully grasp the concept of social anxiety, if they do not personally feel that way.  They may underestimate the effects and result of feeling such a way.  In our world today, there is a lot of fear about going outside due to the amount of violence that continuously parades around the world, with one incident after another.  There are even more public shootings and bombings occurring more frequently making someone social fear even more heightened and unbearable since they have a reason to not leave the house.  Even though people with social anxiety may be physically afraid to complete certain tasks, some also may not be able to trust others with their thoughts and emotions.  Compared to the past, times are completely different today when it comes to socializing.  Nowadays, students are given heavy work loads, thus prohibiting them from going to social events and having time to go out and meet up with friends.  All of these factors contribute to an individual not being able to function in social situations and gaining anxiety from even thinking about it.  One positive is the fact that, today many people are becoming more aware of social anxiety as it is being discussed more.  Social anxiety is being acknowledged by others and not dismissed, due to the fact that the population of people who suffer from these feelings or attacks are higher now than in the past.

Success

You have to get over an obstacle in order to achieve success. This obstacle may be as big as getting over the death of a loved one or as small as fully completing the monkey bars at the park. Success in itself can definitely make someone feel accomplished and overall boost their self-esteem. By gaining success in an area, you may feel as if you are invincible to that obstacle. Success depends on the individual themselves. It may be hard to achieve for some than others but in the end both individuals have to apply hard work and determination in order to achieve the goals they set out. In my opinion, it has always been important to understand the problem that lies ahead of me.  By mentally preparing myself and laying out a plan definitely helps me get over an obstacle so I can always reach success.  It is important to accept and understand the hard journey an individual is going to embark on an order to achieve their goals.  One day, as I enter a field I am interested in, success is going to mean a lot more to me than it does now so I’m only talking about it from an outer perspective.
